Chico Police Search For Missing Hit-and-Run Driver
The Chico Police Department (CPD) is searching for a missing driver after the motorist was involved in two hit-and-run collisions on Friday, October 16, 2020. The two accidents occurred within five minutes of each other and involved a cyclist and a pedestrian. Both individuals who were hurt during the series of collisions were left with major trauma, and both were hospitalized.
Incident Details
The initial collision happened sometime in the morning at Boucher Street Market. For unknown reasons, a black Acura accelerated toward a woman riding a bicycle. According to an accident witness, the cyclist was knocked several feet into the air by the impact. The second hit-and-run happened at the Beacon gas station located on Fair Street, where the Acura ran over an employee. Further details about the accidents have not yet been reported by officials.
Response and Investigation
After the collisions occurred, witnesses contacted police who arrived on-scene shortly after. When they reached the area, the Acura driver had already fled the scene. Both individuals were found with major injuries and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Reports indicated that the individual struck at the gas station did not suffer life-threatening trauma.
At this time, police have been able to locate and seize the involved vehicle, but the suspected driver has not been apprehended. As the search for the missing driver continues, CPD has asked that anybody with information about the accident or the location of the suspect get in touch with investigating officers. Callers should use (530) 897-4900 to report what they know.
Recovering Compensation After a Hit-and-Run
After auto accidents, many people are left with major financial issues. Not only is injury treatment often expensive, but being injured can involve a long period of recovery. During this period, many people aren’t able to work, resulting in a sudden and very serious loss of income. These issues often leave people worried about how they will be able to recover and move on after major accidents.
Thankfully, crash survivors can seek compensation for their losses by filing an injury claim. In most cases, these claims are made against negligent parties to the accident. However, in the case of hit-and-run, the missing driver may never be found and, for this reason, cannot be held financially responsible.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
While many people worry about how they will be able to claim compensation without an at-fault party to hold responsible, hit-and-run accident survivors are often able to obtain payments through their own insurance policies. This is possible through “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.”
This coverage is optional in the state of California, and the amount of compensation available can vary widely depending on your specific policy. Furthermore, insurance companies may make low-ball offers in order to avoid paying survivors the full compensation that they deserve. For these reasons, it’s important to get in touch with an attorney who can help you with your claim.
