Vallejo Man Dies in Car Accident, CHP Continues Investigation

On Friday, May 15, 2020, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) asked for public help with a continuing investigation into a hit-and-run accident that cost a Vallejo man his life. The accident occurred on Wednesday, March 6, 2020, and the decedent was identified as 42-year-old Jasper Canias.

Accident Information

The accident happened on Highway 680 near the exit for Highway 4 at around 5:30 a.m. According to police, Canias had been driving a blue Toyota Corolla that spun out while heading south on the freeway. The Corolla subsequently traveled across three lanes and eventually struck a tree and light pole on the highway’s right-hand shoulder.

Response

When response officials arrived at the crash site, they found Canias in his vehicle with severe injuries. He was placed on an ambulance and rushed to a nearby hospital to receive emergency care. The Vallejo man was reportedly in hospital care for four days before he tragically lost his life. No other individuals were injured during the accident.

Investigation

CHP spokesperson Brandon Correia stated that CHP did not initially notify the public about the fatality on social media because they believed releasing the identity could impede accident investigations. These investigations reportedly turned up an accident witness who told CHP that another vehicle caused the accident by bumping into the Toyota.

As CHP is looking for the vehicle, they have asked for further help with their investigation from members of the public. CHP stated that the vehicle was described as a dark-colored, lowered sedan with after-market, oversized rims. While officers indicated that the witness did not state the model or make of the car, the vehicle was reportedly driving quickly and weaving in and out of traffic before the accident took place.

Anybody who has information about the missing driver and/or vehicle, or was driving on southbound I-680 between 5:15 and 5:35 a.m. on March 6, 2020, is encouraged to get in touch with CHP’s Contra Costa office by calling (925) 646-4980.

Wrongful Death Damages

Families who have lost somebody in a car accident can find themselves in a very difficult situation. People dealing with a traumatic loss can experience overwhelming grief and may feel unable to keep up with their daily lives. It can take a long time to cope with feelings of grief and it is very important to take the steps you can to help your family and yourself heal.

However, fatal accidents can also have a major financial impact, and worrying about lost income, funeral costs, hospital bills, and other expenses can make it hard for families to move on with their lives. In order to make sure you receive the compensation you deserve for these damages, it’s important to contact a Vallejo wrongful death lawyer.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

When an accident involves a hit-and-run driver, people are often worried about how they will be able to recover compensation when the at-fault driver can’t be held liable. In many cases, families are able to obtain this compensation through their own insurance companies by utilizing “uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.” Because this coverage is optional and can vary from policy to policy, it’s best to have professional advice before moving forward with your insurer.
