Clearlake CHP Hosts Teen Driving Class
Young drivers are at risk of being involved in vehicle accidents, and local law enforcement is taking part in an education campaign to reduce that risk. The Clearlake Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) is hosting a class for young drivers on Thursday, July 25, 2019. Both parents and teens are invited to come and learn vital information about roadway safety aimed to help teenage drivers from suffering serious or even fatal injuries. The class is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and lasts until 7:30 p.m. and takes place at 5700 Live Oak Drive in Kelseyville. According to CHP, the course is free to the public.
The Program
The event is a part of the nationwide “Start Smart” program, which is supported by the California Office of Traffic Safety as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Organizers of the education campaign have stated that the classes are a response to startling statistics regarding teen accidents. Recent studies have shown that young drivers are around five times more likely to be involved in serious car accidents than older motorists. Additionally, data shows that vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for young people who are between the ages of 15 and 20.
As a part of the Start Smart class, attendees will go over important roadways regulations as well as watch movies and video clips made to help inform parents and teens about the traffic-related issues that are relevant to their safety. Topics covered during the class will include teen driving restrictions, avoiding distraction, how to drive defensively, and more.
CHP has stated that space in the class is limited and those who would like to reserve seats should contact Officer Joel Skeen by calling (707) 279-0103 or by emailing [email protected].
Teen Collision Factors
These are some of the most common factors involved in accidents in which one or more driver was under the age of 21.
- Inexperience: Younger drivers have had less time to become comfortable driving a vehicle. Not knowing how your vehicle responds to sudden turns or collision-avoidance maneuvers can turn dangerous situations into serious accidents.
- Speeding: Many young drivers feel invincible and don’t worry about losing control of their vehicle.
- DUI: Young drivers aren’t only new to driving. Not knowing safe boundaries regarding intoxication and driving can lead to serious accidents.
- Distracted Driving: During the time it takes to read an average text, a vehicle traveling at highway speed will drive further than the distance of a football field. While drivers don’t have their full attention on the road, they are much more liable to be involved in a crash.
While teens are involved in accidents more frequently than older drivers, it’s important to remember that accidents can be caused by many factors. After a vehicle accident, it is important to determine who may be at fault for the collision. To learn more about this process, watch this helpful video:
