Construction Scheduled for Butte County Highways

Caltrans is actively working on construction projects all over the northern California region, and many of these are in Butte County. At this time, three major Caltrans projects are underway on Butte County Highways. The construction projects are meant to improve roadway quality while reducing traffic, as well as the number of dangerous car accidents across the county.

Route 32 Pedestrian Safety Project

A $6.6 million construction project on State Route 32 in the city of Chico was started earlier this month and is expected to be completed sometime this fall. The project will upgrade pedestrian signals, curb ramps, and sidewalks at various locations in the city, including 8th and 9th Streets as well as W. 7th Street. Caltrans indicated that none of the construction related to this project is expected to have an effect on traffic in the area. The project is expected to improve both accessibility and safety for local pedestrians.

Route 70 Project

Work is scheduled to continue on a $42.1 million project being implemented jointly by Caltrans and the Butte County Association of Governments. The project aims to widen State Route 70 from two to four lanes as well as add a center median and two-way turn lanes between Cox Lane and Palermo Road just south of the city of Oroville. Authorities have indicated that this project will not only widen highway shoulders but will add a large recovery area where errant vehicles will be able to correct their direction in dangerous situations.

This project isn’t expected to be completed until fall 2021. Additionally, further information about this project, as well as updates on construction, can be found here. At this time, no traffic-disrupting construction is scheduled.

Short Term Projects

A number of short-term projects are also scheduled in the area, including construction at:

  • State Route 70 between Penstock and House Roads
  • State Route 99 between Scrub Creek and Dry Creek
  • State Route 99 at the off-ramp for 20th Street
  • State Route 99 between Bonita Road and B Street
  • State Route 149 between the SR 99 junction and Gold Run Creek
  • State Route 162 between Forman Road and Bidwell Bar Bridge

Roadway Defects and Government Liability

When people think of at-fault parties to car accidents, they typically think of negligent drivers. However, in many cases, the government responsible for maintaining the road may also be liable. If the roadway is in disrepair or is dangerously designed, it’s often possible to hold county, state, or city level governments responsible for damages through personal injury claims.

However, filing a claim against a government entity can be complicated, and it can be difficult to obtain the compensation you deserve. One major factor that affects these cases is a dramatically shorter time-limit for filing your claim. To make sure that you are able to claim the payments you need to cover your expenses, it’s vital to call an attorney right away.
