Elderly Woman Fatally Injured in Highway 70 Crash
On Saturday, March 13, 2021, an elderly woman tragically lost her life after she was injured during a Highway 70 crash. California Highway Patrol (CHP) indicates that the crash happened in the afternoon at a rural highway location outside of the small community of Portola. The decedent was identified by county officials as Shirley Joy, a local 85-year-old woman. In addition to Joy, three other people suffered injuries during the accident.
Crash Details
The crash took place at approximately 3:38 p.m. on Highway 70 at the intersection of Grizzly Road. According to CHP traffic reporting, Joy was riding as a passenger in a 2016 Kia Sorento that was heading southbound on Grizzly approaching the highway. At this time, an 18-year-old woman from Portola was driving a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek heading west on Highway 70.
Joy’s vehicle reportedly attempted to make a left-hand turn from Grizzly in order to enter Highway 70 and, in the process, entered the path of the oncoming Subaru. According to police, the Subaru attempted to perform collision-avoidance maneuvers but was ultimately unable to steer clear of the Kia. As a result, the front end of the Subaru crashed into the Kia’s left-front side. Both vehicles were seriously damaged by the impact.
Response
After the crash, CHP dispatched officers, medical personnel, and staff from the local fire department to respond. At the scene, medical officials determined that Joy was severely hurt and had her rushed to the Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. Sadly, Joy eventually succumbed to her injuries while in hospital care. The driver of Joy’s vehicle was also found with serious trauma and was transported to the same hospital. Updates on his condition have not been reported.
The Subaru driver, as well as her 22-year-old passenger, both sustained reportedly minor trauma. Police did not indicate whether or not the Subaru occupants received hospital care.
Investigation
CHP says that their officers are currently conducting a full-scale investigation into this accident. According to reports, the highway was reduced to one-way traffic while police performed initial investigations of evidence at the scene. However, no likely causes have been noted by investigators. Members of the public with information about the incident are urged to contact CHP at (530) 252-1900.
