Fairfield Motorcycle Accidents
I’m Ed Smith, a Fairfield motorcycle accident attorney. In California, there are hundreds of thousands of registered motorcycles, making the state one of the most motorcycle-per-capita states in the nation. Because of this vast amount of motorcycle riders and owners, it isn’t surprising that California is frequently listed as the number one state in the country for motorcycle collisions.
According to recent statistics from the state, there are around 12,000 motorcyclists who suffer injuries and 500 more received fatal injuries across the state annually.
Fairfield is no exception and is the site of multiple traumatic auto accidents involving motorcycles every year. Understanding how, when, and for what reason these accidents occur can help locals to better understand how to best avoid being involved in a motorcycle crash.
Accident Overview
In the eleven years spanning from the beginning of 2006 to the end of 2016, there were 339 motorcycle collisions in Fairfield that involved some form of traumatic or fatal injury. About 59 percent of these accidents happened on a state highway within Fairfield, none involved bicycles, and only one involved a pedestrian.
These accidents involved 14 fatalities in as many crashes, 54 severe injuries across 51 crashes, 176 moderate visible injuries across 165 accidents, and 143 complaints of pain across 109 accidents. It is notable that 4.13 percent of motorcycle accident injuries in Fairfield are fatal, while only .95 percent of Fairfield’s non-motorcycle accident injuries result in fatalities. This means that motorcycle collisions in Fairfield are around 4 times more likely to result in fatal injuries.
Type of Crash
Motorcyclists in local traumatic accidents were most often involved in rear-end collisions, which accounted for about 25 percent of the collisions in question. After this, the most common collision type was rollovers, which accounted for about 20 percent of the accidents. The following most common accident types were, in order from most common to least common, sideswipe accidents at around 19 percent, hit object accidents at about 15 percent, broadside accidents at about 14 percent, and head-on accidents at about 3 percent.
Common Accident Times
By far, most common time for Fairfield’s injury collisions involving motorcycles to take place is between 3:00 p.m and 6:00 p.m.103 (nearly one-third) of the collisions occurred during these hours. The second most dangerous time for motorcyclists in Fairfield has been 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., which saw 58 traumatic accidents involving motorcycles.
Additionally, Fridays and Saturdays are the days that saw the highest number of the collisions in question.
Common Crash Locations
A very large portion of Fairfield motorcycle injury accidents occur on I-80, especially near the Manuel Campos, Air Base Parkway, Travis Boulevard, and Rockville Road junctions. Roadway areas within the city that have seen a high frequency of accidents involving motorcycles include:
- North Texas Street at Air Base Parkway
- East Tabor Avenue at Clay Bank Road
- West Texas Street between Gregory Lane and Pennsylvania Avenue
- Highway 12 at Beck Avenue
- East Atlantic Avenue at Dover Avenue
