Fatal Eureka Area Highway Accident

Fatal Eureka Area Highway Accident

I’m Ed Smith, a Eureka personal injury lawyer. A collision that recently occurred on Highway 101 just a few miles north of Eureka left a local man with severe injuries and cost one driver his life. Humboldt area California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the crash shortly after it took place during the morning of Thursday, June 7, 2018. CHP says that the accident only involved one vehicle and is still being investigated. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is waiting to report the deceased man’s identity until his family has been notified. I’d like to extend sympathy and support to those who are in mourning after losing their friend and family member.

Crash Details

CHP reported that the accident took place at about 10:28 a.m. on US-101 to the south of the McDonald Creek Road intersection in the area of Stone Lagoon. A silver-colored 2004 Honda SUV had been heading north along the highway. According to reports, the vehicle had been traveling at high speeds when it drifted off of the western edge of the road. After drifting off the highway, the Honda rolled over before colliding with a large tree on the side of the road. The vehicle then came to a complete stop on its side while leaning against the tree.

Emergency Response

Responders sent to the site of the accident reported that both occupants of the vehicle were found with major injuries. Medics attempted to save the driver’s life, but the man tragically passed away before he could be put on in ambulance.

The vehicle’s passenger, who has been identified as a 32-year-old man from Belleville, Illinois, was given treatment at the accident scene before being taken to the Mad River Community Hospital by ambulance. The status of the injured man remains unreported.

Additionally, a dog belonging to the passenger was found in the vehicle. Officers reported that the dog was uninjured during the crash. No other passengers were reported to have been inside the vehicle at the time of the accident.

Investigation

Officers of CHP say that they have not yet determined why the vehicle drifted off of the road. Accident factors that commonly cause collisions like this one include things like faulty brakes and/or tires, a dangerous defect in the road, driver distraction, medical emergencies, and more.

CHP has asked that anyone with information about this accident call them to help with their investigation. Callers should contact the Humboldt Area CHP office’s non-emergency phone number, 707-822-5981. Officers noted that any helpful information about the accident would be much appreciated.
