Highway 20 Auto Accident Causes Severe Trauma
On Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at least one person was left with major injuries following a Highway 20 auto accident. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says that the collision happened in the early evening and involved two different passenger vehicles which were both totaled during the incident. The number of individuals who were injured during the crash had not been stated at the time of reporting, and the accident is still under CHP investigation.
Crash Details
Officials stated that the accident happened at around 4:32 p.m. According to CHP traffic incident reports, a Blue Ford Focus was traveling on Highway 30 on the east side of Clearlake near mile marker 20. For reasons that remain unknown, the Focus drifted off-road and eventually struck a guardrail. After striking the rail, the Ford veered in the opposite direction, traveling over the median and eventually crashing head-on into an oncoming vehicle. The second vehicle was described as a Gray Ford Escape. Further details about the incident have not been made available.
Response
Responders dispatched by CHP arrived at the accident site at approximately 4:38 p.m. Responders reportedly discovered at least one person had suffered serious trauma and called for ambulances. Reports did indicate that at least one of the injured parties was elderly.
Additionally, two flatbed tow trucks were ordered to the scene for the purpose of removing the wrecked vehicles from the roadway.
Investigation
As CHP conducts a full accident investigation, there have been no reports issued regarding likely causes. In many cases similar to this one, the accident occurs because of multiple factors, some of which may be out of the control of either driver. Often, a collision happens because of a faulty car part or a dangerous defect in the highway. In both of these situations, parties other than the involved motorists may share liability for the accident.
Head-On Collisions Are Dangerous
Head-on vehicle accidents involve tremendous amounts of force. Because both vehicles transfer all of their momentum into the other, there’s a high chance that these crashes will cause severe trauma. According to available data, almost all head-on accidents that happen at speeds exceeding 50 miles per hour involve major injuries.
Some of the most common injury types resulting from head-on auto accidents include traumatic brain injuries, cervical sprains, spinal cord damage, fractured limbs, chest trauma, and more. All of these injuries can range in severity but are likely to require extensive treatment from medical professionals.
