Pedestrian Injured in Hit-and-Run Accident
A single pedestrian was injured during a hit-and-run crash that occurred on the main road in west Eureka during the afternoon of Wednesday, June 6, 2018. Responders said that the injured woman suffered serious trauma and needed treatment at a local hospital. Although the specific nature of her injuries was not stated by medical officials, the woman was reported to be in stable condition at around five hours after the crash occurred. Officers of the Eureka Police Department (EPD) are currently looking for the driver of a vehicle they suspect caused the collision.
Collision Details
EPD reported that the accident took place at around 12:00 p.m. on Broadway Street/Highway 101 near the West Del Norte Street intersection. Officers said that the pedestrian had been walking over Broadway street outside of a marked crossing area when she was struck by a passing vehicle. The vehicle immediately drove away from the scene of the crash, leaving the injured woman on the roadway.
Response
After witnesses called EPD in order to report that the woman had been struck, EPD sent emergency officers to respond. The woman was found with serious injuries and rushed by ground ambulance to the nearest hospital to receive emergency treatment. No other individuals or vehicles were involved in this accident.
Investigation
EPD officers have said that the vehicle that struck the woman was last seen driving eastbound on Wabash Avenue from the Broadway intersection. The suspected vehicle was described by witnesses as a black-colored sedan with a loud exhaust pipe. Police say that the vehicle may be a Mitsubishi Lancer made in the early 2000’s.
EPD has asked that anybody with information that could help them find the hit-and-run driver contact officers to report what they know. Those who think they can aid in this investigation should call EPD’s non-emergency phone line, (707) 441-4044.
Hit-and-Run Accidents
Hit-and-Run accidents are a major problem in California. Over the past decade, Eureka was the site of over 200 hit-and-run accidents that resulted in one or more injuries. However, many people don’t know what to do when a hit-and-run accident happens.
What To Do
The most important thing to do is to seek proper medical care. Many people struck by hit-and-run drivers refuse medical care because they do not know how they will pay for it. However, not only is refusing care a danger to your health, but courts and insurance companies may reduce the value of your claim if you don’t.
After getting medical attention, the accident should be reported to the proper authorities. Not only is this the law, but reporting as soon as possible increases the chance that officers will find the missing driver.
Finally, those injured in hit-and-run crashes should call an experienced personal injury lawyer. A good lawyer will be able to guide you through the process of claiming the full amount of money you deserve for the damages you have suffered.
