Hyundai Kia Recall Possible Engine Failure
I’m Ed Smith, a Modesto personal injury lawyer. Some of the most popular vehicles found on the roadway today are Hyundais and Kias. Kia, which is a smaller affiliate of Hyundai, both make up the fifth-largest automaker of the world. What many do not know about this Korean automaker is that the company has recently issued their second recall in two years for the same alleged engine defect.
What’s Going On?
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), debris may have been left from manufacturing. The debris may restrict the flow of oil to connecting rod bearings. Since the oil flow cools the bearings, the debris may cause restriction in the flow. The restriction may increase temperatures which may cause the bearings to wear and fail. The engine may stall as a result of this manufacturing defect.
Owners of the recalled vehicles may hear a knocking noise coming from the engine. The sound from the engine may increase in frequency as the engine speed rises. Owners may also view engine warning lights on the dashboard of their vehicle. Owners that experience either symptom with their vehicle are advised to contact their dealers promptly.
The recall covers approximately 572,000 Hyundai vehicles and 618,000 Kia vehicles. The company has not yet received any reports of crashes or injuries.
Which Vehicles?
The following vehicles, with the 2.0 and 2.4 liter four-cylinder “Theta” engines, are included in the recall:
- Hyundai Sante Fe Sport SUV: 2013-2014
- Hyundai Sontata: 2013-2014
- Kia Optima: 2011-2014
- Kia Sportage SUV: 2011-2013
- Kia Sorento SUV: 2012-2014
When Will the Recall Start?
Hyundai and Kia will notify owners to bring their vehicles to the dealer for engine inspection. The dealer will replace the block of the engine if necessary at no cost to owners. The recall is scheduled to begin on May 19, 2017.
