Boating Accident at Lake Mendocino

On Saturday, June 24, 2017, a Ukiah man tragically lost his life after being involved in a boating accident on nearby Lake Mendocino. The accident also left four others with traumatic injuries ranging from minor to moderate. The details of this boating accident are included below.

What Happened?

According to information from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the collision occurred sometime before 10:30 p.m. MCSO received a report from CalFire’s dispatch indicating that a boat collision had happened on the lake and possibly involved a fatality and multiple injuries.

MCSO reported that the crash happened a short distance from the lake’s northern boat ramp and involved two separate boats. Investigators have noted that one of the involved boats was leaving the boat dock while the other was approaching; the boats reportedly collided as a result.

Additional Details

MCSO has indicated that one of the boats might have had seven individuals on board and that the other had three individuals on board when the boating accident occurred. MCSO also mentioned that they received reports of individuals seen leaving the scene of the accident in a white four-door sedan. However, it was later learned that some of the people in the van had left to seek emergency medical treatment for their injuries.

Response and Injuries

When emergency responders arrived at the scene, they found that Miguel Corona, a 26-year-old man from Ukiah, had sustained major injuries. Officials eventually declared Corona dead on-scene. Four other individuals at the site of the collision were found with injuries, though the exact nature of their injuries has not been reported.

We extend our condolences to the friends and family of the man who passed away.

Investigation

The MCSO Detective Unit has this boating accident under active investigation and is working with the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol Unit in order to figure out exactly how it happened. Investigators are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor in the boating accident. Additionally, they are trying to determine whether on not darkness or the speed of the boats contributed to the crash in any way.

It is also suspected that one of the drivers may have left the scene of the crash, making this a hit-and-run accident.
