Laytonville Big-Rig Crash Causes Major Injury
On Thursday, August 5, 2021, a 24-year-old man suffered major trauma after he was involved in a Laytonville big-rig crash. Officials from California Highway Patrol (CHP) state that the crash took place in the afternoon and involved two vehicles. According to reports, one other person sustained minor injuries during the incident and the crash remains under active investigation.
Crash Information
The collision occurred at around 2:50 p.m. on Highway 101 near Steele Lane, right outside the southern border of Laytonville. The 24-year-old man was driving a 2005 Saturn northbound on 101 when, for reasons that aren’t currently understood, his car drifted into southbound traffic lanes. While in southbound lanes, the Saturn traveled into the path of an oncoming 2012 Freightliner semi-truck. The two vehicles collided head-on.
Response
CHP dispatched an emergency response team to the site directly after learning about the incident. At the scene, responders discovered that the Saturn driver was critically injured and had him flown via helicopter to the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where he was provided with emergency medical treatment. Updates on his health condition have not been provided by hospital staff at this time.
The driver of the truck, reportedly a 63-year-old man from Williams, was discovered with minor injuries and driven to the Adventist Health Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits to receive care.
Investigation
CHP closed Highway 101 in both directions, conducting one-way traffic control for hours while CalTrans worked to clear debris from the road, and officers performed preliminary accident scene investigations. Presently, police haven’t stated what they think may have contributed to causing the crash.
Big-Rig Accidents and Liability
Big-rigs are huge and cause major damage in the event of a crash. Even in low-speed collisions, big-rigs can leave people with life-changing injuries, and the companies that own and operate these massive vehicles are well aware of the risks they pose. Because of this, trucking companies usually act quickly and aggressively to defend themselves from financial responsibility for collisions. In many cases, the company will even send their own accident investigation scene to the crash site in order to take witness statements and collect their own evidence.
This proactive, strong defense can make it hard for injured individuals to obtain the compensation that they deserve for their injuries. However, a skilled truck accident attorney can help. The sooner that your attorney can begin working on your case, the better they’ll be able to ensure you are compensated for things like lost income, medical expenses, personal suffering, and more.
