Two Young Men Killed in Manteca Crash
A car accident involving a tow truck occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, November 26, 2016. Unfortunately, the accident fatally injured two young men from Modesto in the crash.
What Happened?
Two young men were traveling southeast in a 2015 white Subaru along Moffat Boulevard in the vicinity of East Woodward Avenue at approximately 12:07 pm. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 24-year-old Peter Funtila with his passenger, 23-year-old Christian Sangco. For reasons that are not known, Funtila’s vehicle veered from side to side and entered the opposite lane with oncoming traffic approaching. A tow truck driver was traveling in the opposite lane and was unable to avoid Funtila’s vehicle. Funtila’s vehicle then collided with the tow truck.
What Caused the Crash?
Authorities from the Manteca Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating together to determine the cause of the collision. Officials are questioning whether or not if there were any mechanical failures with Funtila’s 2015 Subaru or a roadway defect that contributed to the cause of the crash. The accident took place along a straightaway and the road surface was not wet at the time of the collision. Investigators are searching into whether Funtila’s driving or undetermined rate of speed may have been a factor in the crash.
Were There Any Injuries?
The impact of the collision caused significant injuries to all three occupants from the two vehicles involved in the crash. The driver of the white Subaru, Peter Funtila, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Funtila’s passenger, Christian Sangco, was transported to the Doctors Medical Center in Modesto but later passed away due to the grave nature of his injuries. The driver of the tow truck sought out medical treatment on his own.
Two Lives Forever Remembered
Peter Funtila and Christian Sangco were longtime friends since grade school. Both men attended Our Lady of Fatima Elementary School together in Modesto. Funtila and Sangco were celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday weekend together and went to watch a movie in Manteca with other friends. The friends traveled in three separate vehicles traveling back to Modesto in a caravan. The caravan drove along Moffat Avenue to avoid the traffic mayhem on the Highway 120 bypass. Funtila’s car was the last vehicle in the caravan.
We extend our condolences to the family members of the two men that passed away in this tragic accident.
