Motorcycle Collides Head-on with SUV, Kills Arcata Man

Accident Details
According to information included in a public report released by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident happened at about 3:40 p.m. A motorcyclist had reportedly been traveling east on State Route 299 close to the rest stop Francis B. Mathews between Hawkins Bar and Salyer. CHP reported that a motorcyclist drove his vehicle into the oncoming lane directly in front of the path of a SUV that had been traveling west on 299.
This motorcycle reportedly collided with a large SUV practically head-on. As a result of the impact, the motorcycle was knocked off of the roadway and the motorcyclist was subsequently ejected from the motorcycle.
Response and Injury
Officials from the Salyer Volunteer Fire Department, Trinity County Sheriff’s Office, Hawkins Bar Volunteer Fire Department, and CHP all responded to the collision. When emergency medical officials arrived at the scene, they found that a male motorcyclist had sustained fatal injuries in the accident. The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Occupants of the SUV were not reported to sustained any injuries in the accident. Additionally, authorities have not yet made the identity of the deceased motorcyclist public, but have said that they will do so after his next-of-kin is notified.
Investigation
CHP currently has this incident under active investigation. Officers have stated that they do not know why the motorcyclist apparently drove into oncoming traffic and are working to determine the reasons for his fatal maneuver.
CHP has also stated that they are not currently certain if alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision in any way. Other possible factors that contributed to this accident may include distracted driving, driving while fatigued, faulty vehicle parts, dangerous roadway conditions, and more.
Motorcycle Fatalities
According to data released in reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), more than 4,500 motorcyclists in the United States lose their lives and an average of over 75,000 are hurt in accidents every year. Motorcycle crashes present a high risk of fatality and account for about 14 percent of traffic fatalities every year. NHTSA reports that motorcyclists are around 29 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to lose their lives in accidents.
