Motorcyclist Killed After Crashing in Yreka

I’m Ed Smith, a Yreka Motorcycle Accident Lawyer. A motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene after he slid off the road on Wednesday, July 26.

What Happened?

According to the Yreka Police Department, the unnamed motorcyclist was riding south on State Route 3, just north of Callahan, California. He was riding a 2012 Kawasaki at about 60 miles per hour. As he approached the turn, he did not turn sharp enough and started to drift towards the edge of the road. When he hit the gravel shoulder the bike slid out from under him. The rider hit his head and was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet but sustained fatal injuries to his head as a result of the motorcycle accident.

How did this Happen?

Misjudging a turn can be a fatal mistake when riding a motorcycle, especially at high speeds. Even with proper safety gear, the violence of a crash can be too much for a human body. Head trauma is the leading cause of death in all vehicular accidents. Helmets can protect a motorcyclist from many life-threatening impacts and making sure that they are the proper style, fit, and safety rating can save a life.

Helmets – Can they Save a Life?

There are three main types of helmets; full-faced, three-quarter, and half shell helmets. Full-faced helmets are by far the safest, as Dietmar Otte discovered through research that about 45% of all helmet impacts are to the face area. Some full-face helmets are modular and have the ability to flip the entire face protector up, not just the visor. These add more versatility but make sure that they are from a reputable company.

In the United States, there are minimum safety ratings a helmet must achieve. This minimum is called the DOT standard. Many avid riders urge other motorcyclists to look for helmets that have passed other, more rigid standards. ECE 22.05 standards test is held by Europe and is a much more rigorous test on helmet safety. Another, better test than the DOT is the Snell test. Look for helmets that have DOT and one of these other safety ratings.

Another very important thing is the fit of a helmet. To make sure a helmet fits properly go through this checklist.

  • Everything should fit snugly. Your cheeks should be touching the cheek pads, and your forehead and temples should be touching the brow pads.
  • If you shake your head the helmet should not move around but stay firmly on your head. If there is any play then there is a risk of it coming off or moving around enough during a crash to where it will not properly protect your head.
  • New helmets should be a little tighter than normal because the liner will compress with time.
  • Make sure the helmet is comfortable. Although we want it to be secure, if it is too tight then you may develop sore spots or a headache.
