One Injured, One Killed in Napa Accident
I’m Ed Smith, a Napa personal injury lawyer. Recently, a Sacramento woman was seriously hurt, and a Carlsbad man passed away as a result of injuries sustained in an accident in Napa County. The wreck was first reported by California Highway Patrol (CHP) not long after it took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Officers are still investigating the crash, but have listed high speed as a factor. Napa County Sheriff’s Office staff identified the decedent as 48-year-old Patrick Joseph Malley II, a former resident of Citrus Heights. The injured woman was identified as 45-year-old Mary Merlino. My sincere condolences are sent out to Malley’s loved ones during this difficult time of loss.
Crash Details
According to reports from CHP, the accident happened at around 5:45 p.m. Malley had been driving a 2016 Chevy Camaro on Highway 128 near the Wragg Canyon Road intersection to the south of Lake Berryessa. Officers said that Malley’s car had been driving at high speeds when it traveled off of the road. After driving off of the highway, the Camaro collided head-on with a tree.
Injuries
After receiving a call notifying them about the serious crash, CHP dispatched response staff to the accident site. When they arrived at the wreck, medics found Malley with severe injuries. Responders were tragically not able to help Malley, who lost his life before he could be given treatment.
The only passenger in the Camaro was Merlino. Responders reported that they found Merlino with major trauma. She was given emergency treatment at the scene and was later taken by helicopter to the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vacaville.
Additionally, both Malley and Merlino had been wearing seatbelts when the crash took place. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Investigation
CHP has said that they do not know what factors caused this accident. Officials have not stated whether driver impairment is suspected. Possible causes of the crash include common accident factors such as a dangerous section of roadway, a faulty car part, a medical emergency, and more.
Another Recent Napa Fatality
This is the second fatal accident this week that took place in Napa County. The first happened on Saturday, May 19, 2018, near Yountville. A San Francisco man and his wife had been visiting wineries to celebrate their anniversary when their Uber was struck by an out-of-control vehicle that drove into oncoming lanes on Highway 28. Three people were seriously hurt in the crash, and the 28-year-old San Francisco man was left with fatal trauma. An investigation into this crash is still being conducted by CHP.
