Major Pileup on Fairfield Highway
During the night of Wednesday, December 11, 2019, a series of car accidents involving almost twelve vehicles occurred on a Fairfield highway. The accidents all took place within the same 15 minute time period, and, according to reports, caused multiple injuries requiring hospital care. Traffic reports indicate that all lanes of Westbound 80 were eventually shut down and stayed closed for nearly an hour while accident response was underway. The incident is still being investigated by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials.
What Happened?
CHP was initially contacted at 9:40 p.m. by a caller reporting a four-vehicle crash that took place just west of the truck scales near Cordelia. Callers indicated that the four vehicles were blocking several highway lanes. When emergency responders reached the crash scene, a total of nine vehicles were involved in the accident. By 9:55 p.m., the tally had reached 11 vehicles. CHP later stated that a total of eight separate accidents contributed to the incident.
Injuries
According to staff from the Fairfield Fire Department, six people suffered injuries during the series of crashes, and only some of them were hospitalized. None of the injuries were expected to be life-threatening. Further details about the nature of the injuries sustained during the incident were not made available.
Highway Closure
CHP sent out a regional traffic alert before closing the entire westbound side of the major Fairfield highway for just over an hour. While the freeway was closed, five separate tow trucks were called to the accident site to remove wrecked vehicles.
By 10:55 p.m., police had reopened four lanes, but traffic remained halted because a driver was unable to restart his vehicle after stopping behind the accident site. The remaining two lanes of the highway were reopened by 11:15 p.m.
