One Dies in Chico Pedestrian Auto Accident

On Thursday, August 6, 2020, one person sadly passed away after being injured in a Chico pedestrian auto accident. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office identified the decedent shortly after the accident occurred as Patricia Coombes, a 92-year-old woman from Chico. Coombes was the only individual who suffered injuries during the incident. Investigators from the Chico Police Department (CPD) are attempting to determine what factors caused the collision.

Crash Information

The accident took place just after 7:30 a.m. at the roundabout located at Yosemite Drive and Idyllwild Circle. According to police, a 55-year-old man was driving a passenger vehicle on Idyllwild and attempted to make a right-hand turn in order to enter southbound lanes of Yosemite Drive. CPD indicated that the vehicle performed the turn at around ten miles per hour. At the same time, Coombes had been walking across the street near the roundabout and was struck by the vehicle as it turned.

Response

The crash was called into CPD at 7:33 a.m., and emergency staff were immediately sent to the scene. When they arrived, responders discovered that Coombes had received critical injuries. Tragically, she was declared deceased on-site.

Investigation

CPD Sgt. Todd Lefkowitz told reporters that CPD suspects that the sun played a role in the collision. Additionally, CPD indicated that the involved driver stopped at the accident site and cooperated with investigators. At this time, neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as accident factors and no criminal charges have been filed. Anybody who has information about the accident is asked to get in touch with CPD’s Traffic Division by calling (530) 897-4970.

Pedestrian-involved auto accidents happen often and can be caused by a number of factors. Furthermore, many common collision factors aren’t things that pedestrians or drivers are able to control. These can include dangerous roads with missing signage, poor design, or pavement issues, as well as defective vehicles, and more.
