One Seriously Hurt in Eureka Pedestrian Hit-and-Run
On Saturday, December 12, 2020, one person was seriously injured during a Eureka pedestrian hit-and-run. California Highway Patrol (CHP) initially reported the accident in the evening and indicated that it involved one pedestrian and multiple passenger vehicles. The injured party was reportedly hospitalized and remained in hospital custody as of the latest reports. Additionally, CHP has stated that their officers are actively investigating the cause of this serious auto accident.
Crash Details
CHP reports that this collision happened at around 6:50 p.m. on Elk River Road in the southern area of the city. However, specific information about the events leading up to the crash haven’t been provided. According to CHP reports, a pedestrian was struck by two vehicles. While the first vehicle remained at the accident scene, the other, reportedly a pickup truck, immediately fled the area.
After the crash was called into CHP dispatch, an emergency team was rushed to the site. When responders arrived at the location of the crash, they found the pedestrian was severely hurt. Medical officials have reported that the individual suffered two fractured legs as well as a fractured arm. The pedestrian was reportedly conscious and speaking as they were driven to the hospital.
Investigation
As the accident remains under investigation, police are still searching for the missing driver and vehicle. Officers have not been able to provide descriptions of either. Anybody with information about the whereabouts of the driver and/or truck are encouraged to contact CHP to report what they know. Those looking to report information should use the non-emergency phone line (800) TELL-CHP.
At this point, investigators haven’t indicated what factors may have caused this crash. As the investigation continues, police are looking into multiple common accident factors, including non-pedestrian factors like dangerous roadway design, auto part defects, and more.
Hit-and-Run Injuries and Recovering Compensation
With hit-and-run car accidents, injured survivors may worry that they won’t be able to obtain compensation for their injuries because the negligent party cannot be held financially responsible. While police are often able to apprehend hit-and-run drivers, injured parties may be able to obtain compensation even if the driver is never found. This can be accomplished by going through your own insurance policy and using your “uninsured/uninsured motorist coverage.”
However, this coverage isn’t mandatory in California, and the amount of compensation available to those with this type of coverage varies depending on their specific policy. Furthermore, insurance companies may try to avoid paying the full amount that survivors truly deserve.
For these reasons, it’s crucial to have an expert Eureka personal injury attorney on your side while trying to seek compensation from your insurance company for hit-and-run damages.
