Orland Woman Severely Injured During Collision
On Thursday, September 17, 2020, one person suffered major trauma as the result of a collision near Orland. The injured woman was identified as a 29-year-old Orland resident, and updates on her condition have not been reported by hospital staff. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident happened in the late morning and involved a single passenger vehicle. No other individuals were reported to have suffered injuries.
Crash Information
The accident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. on Newville Road a few miles to the west of Orland. The woman was driving in a white-colored two-door sedan heading east on Newville when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle while navigating a curve near Stoney Creek bridge. After the driver lost control, the car drove off of the northern roadway edge and traveled down an embankment and across a dirt road before it rolled over. The vehicle continued to roll down a second embankment, ejecting the driver in the process.
The collision was reported to CHP by phone, and dispatchers immediately rushed a response team to the site. When officials found the wreck, they determined that the driver had sustained several major injuries. The woman was rushed via ambulance to the Enloe Hospital in Chico for emergency care.
Rollover Accidents
Rollover collisions have a very high rate of severe and fatal injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these crashes make up around ten percent of all deadly US car accidents. In contrast, rollovers are only estimated to be around two percent of collisions in the country.
There are a few factors that make these types of accidents especially dangerous. For example, a vehicle needs to be traveling a certain speed in order for it to have enough momentum to overturn. However, the key reason that rollovers cause such major injuries is weak car roofs. If the roof of a car isn’t designed to withstand a rollover, it can crush inward and leave occupants seriously hurt. These are typically referred to as “roof crush injuries.”
Roof Crush Injuries and Liability
In cases that involve crushed roofs, the manufacturer of the vehicle is often considered to be an at-fault party. This means that the company may be liable to pay for a portion or all of the damages suffered during the accident, much like a negligent driver. However, these companies almost always try to defend themselves from financial liability and crash survivors need to be able to prove that a weak roof caused their injuries. For this reason, it’s critical to preserve the wrecked vehicle so that your attorney can determine whether or not a weak roof was involved.
