Pedestrian Involved Car Accident North of Fortuna Causes Deadly Injuries
One person sustained fatal trauma during a car accident near Fortuna last week. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is withholding the decedent’s identity at this time. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident involved two vehicles as well as a pedestrian and did not cause any further injuries. CHP is currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
Crash Information
The crash happened at around 7:57 on Highway 101 between Fortuna and Loleta. Police stated that a pedestrian was walking east across the northbound side of the highway while apparently crossing the road. At this time, the pedestrian was struck by a northbound 2010 Toyota, knocking him onto the ground. Following the initial collision, the pedestrian was struck by a second vehicle, reportedly a 2006 Chevrolet.
Response
Multiple emergency response agencies arrived at the accident scene including CHP as well as the Forestry Department, Fortuna Fire Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, and City Ambulance. Responders reaching the scene found the pedestrian on the highway with severe injuries. Tragically, the individual was pronounced deceased on-site at 8:07 p.m.
Investigation
As CHP continues to investigate this incident, police have stated that they do not believe either of the drivers were under the influence at the time of the crash. However, no likely causes have been confirmed in police reports. CHP has asked for anybody with information about this incident to contact officers in order to assist with investigations.
