Placer County Accident Injures Two
Auburn area California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that two people were seriously hurt during a rural Placer County crash that took place on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. The accident involved two vehicles and happened on a road that area residents say may be dangerous for drivers. The collision remains under investigation by CHP.
Crash Details
The accident happened during the morning a few miles east of Auburn at the intersection of Virginiatown and Daniel Drive. Surveillance footage from a nearby home shows that a silver-colored sedan parked in the middle of Virginiatown Drive before backing up. At this time, a gold-colored Honda Accord approached the intersection from Daniel Drive. As the Accord approached, the silver sedan reportedly began to turn onto Daniel Drive, entering the path of the other vehicle. The Honda swerved out of the way, traveling off the road and through the fence of a nearby home before striking two trees and coming to a stop. The sedan reportedly drove away from the accident site.
The accident was first discovered by the owner of the home whose fence was destroyed during the incident. She heard the crash and rushed outside to find the mangled Honda in her front yard. The woman told reporters that she was scared because she “thought someone might have died.” When police arrived at the accident scene, they found two occupants in the vehicle, both of whom were significantly injured. Witnesses indicated that both the driver and passenger had suffered facial lacerations, but the full extent of their injuries was not reported.
Investigation
CHP Officer Amy Walker stated that police are currently searching for the driver of the silver sedan. Walker indicated that they want to know why the driver began to turn in front of the other vehicle.
CHP has stated that they believe the silver sedan driver should have seen the Honda approaching. However, neighborhood residents have indicated that they believe the area needs a reduced speed limit as well as warning signs for drivers approaching areas with low visibility.
Phantom Vehicle Accidents
When a driver causes a crash without ever making contact with any of the other vehicles, it’s referred to as a “phantom vehicle accident.” In many cases, these collisions are like hit-and-runs in that it’s sometimes not possible to hold negligent drivers responsible for damages. In these situations, injured parties can often claim payments through their own insurance policies. To do this, crash survivors need to have what’s called “uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM) coverage.” Because this coverage is optional, not all policies include it. Furthermore, not all UM coverage will pay the same amount.
Dangerous Roads
In cases where a dangerous road causes an accident, the government entity responsible for that roadway may share responsibility for the crash. This means that city, county, and state governments may be liable to pay for the damages crash survivors suffer. However, claims involving government entities can be complicated. Furthermore, these claims have a shorter window of time during which survivors can file. To learn more, it’s best to get advice personally from an Auburn personal injury lawyer.
