Police Patrol Vehicle Fatally Strikes Benicia Pedestrian

During the very early morning of Wednesday, November 11, 2020, a pedestrian tragically suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a Benicia Police Department (BPD) patrol vehicle. According to authorities from the Solano County Sheriff’s Department (SCSD), the decedent was a man in his 30’s. However, officials are withholding the identity of the decedent pending his family’s notification. The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as well as the Solano County District Attorney’s Office.

Crash Details

The collision happened at around 2:00 a.m. on the 1900 block of East 2nd Street close to Highway Interstate 780. An on-duty officer with BPD was driving a patrol SUV when his vehicle struck a pedestrian. Further details about the circumstances of this tragic accident have not yet been reported by investigating officials.

Paramedics were immediately called to respond to the incident. However, the pedestrian reportedly passed away at the collision scene.

BPD Statement and Investigation

Interim Police Chief Mike Greene made a public statement about the accident, stating that it was a “tragic incident for all involved.” Greene also expressed that BPD’s “deepest condolences” were extended to the family and loved ones of the decedent.

As an on-duty officer was involved in the accident, BPD will not be taking part in the investigation. As local authorities continue to conduct a full-scale accident investigation, no suspected causal factors have been mentioned in reports. Often, accidents like this one happen for a number of reasons. Furthermore, many common vehicle accident factors aren’t under the control of drivers or pedestrians. Such factors include defective vehicle parts, dangerous roadway design, and more.

Wrongful Death Damages

Families affected by fatal accidents can be left in a very serious situation. The sudden loss of a person in your life isn’t just emotionally devastating, but it can also cause financial insecurity. Often, the decedent was an income-earner in their household or provided valuable services to their loved ones that are expensive to replace. Furthermore, families are frequently charged for medical care rendered before their loved one passed.

All of these issues can make it very hard for families to focus on healing and coping with their grief. For this reason, it’s important to reach out to a wrongful death lawyer. In many cases, families are able to obtain the compensation they need to cover their losses by filing wrongful death claims and holding at-fault parties accountable. Not only can families obtain payments for economic damages, but they are also often able to claim compensation for losses related to personal suffering.
