Solano CHP Conducts Enforcement Operation Over Labor Day Weekend
The Solano Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) released a statement on Wednesday, September 2, 2020, indicating that they would be increasing enforcement efforts during Labor Day weekend. The increased patrols are part of a concerted effort to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries suffered as the result of car accidents during a period that typically sees higher instances of reckless driving.
Increased Enforcement
CHP indicated that their Labor Day Maximum Enforcement Period would begin on Friday starting at 6:01 p.m. During the enforcement period, all available CHP officers will reportedly be patrolling local highways searching for drivers who may be under the influence or are otherwise driving negligently. The enforcement period was scheduled to conclude at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
A Dangerous Weekend
According to statistics from CHP, there were 45 car accident fatalities across the state over Labor Day Weekend of 2019. Police added that nearly three-quarters of these fatal accidents involved individuals who were not properly wearing seat belts. Additionally, CHP reports that they made over 1,000 arrests for DUI violations during last year’s 78-hour enforcement period.
CHP Commissioner Warren Stanley warned California drivers in his statement, saying that driving while intoxicated is “extremely dangerous” for drivers as well as for “everyone on the road with them.” Stanley added that those choosing to travel via car during Labor Day Weekend should “make smart choices and drive to arrive.”
Furthermore, CHP has released a documentary showing the impact that driving under the influence had on one of their officers and his family. The documentary can be viewed on CHP’s website.
DUI and Accidents in Fairfield
In both Solano County and Fairfield, DUI was the fourth most common cause of car accidents between 2008 and 2020. DUI was preceded in both cases by driving at high speeds, making dangerous turns, and violating the right-of-way. In total, 2,368 collisions caused by intoxicated motorists occurred in Solano during this period, and 643 of these accidents happened within the city limits of Fairfield.
Furthermore, DUI crashes in Fairfield were more likely than other accidents to cause fatal or severe trauma. While the overall fatality rate for accidents in the city was at 1.12 percent, collisions that involved a drunk or intoxicated driver were nearly at five percent. This data indicates that DUI accidents in Fairfield were around five times as likely to cause a deadly injury.
Getting Help
Drivers who choose to operate their vehicle while under the influence are almost always considered negligent and can often be held responsible for the damages that they’ve caused. By filing personal injury claims against DUI drivers and their insurance companies, people affected by accidents can obtain compensation for a wide range of damages. To learn more, it’s best to speak with an experienced injury case professional.
