What Do You Think About Cops with Textalyzers?

I’m Ed Smith, an Elk Grove Injury Lawyer. April is Distracted Driving Awareness month.

A new product is being tested where I grew up in the great state of New York.

You’ve heard of the nifty breathalyzer? Well check this out.

Introducing the new “Textalyzer,” designed to catch distracted drivers.

What is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is anything that takes your eyes and attention off the roadway. Most commonly, we think of texting while driving. However, it also includes eating, tuning the radio, applying make up and the like. Today, we are talking about distracted driving — meaning texting while driving.

What is a Textalyzer?

It is a handheld device that looks similar to the breathalyzer (pictured above). A textalyzer can immediately determine if a motorist was texting at the time of their traffic collision.

New York is proposing a bill that would allow police officers to be equipped with a Textalyzer and use it at the scene of an auto accident to immediately determine if a driver was texting at the time of the crash.

What About Personal Privacy?

People worried about their personal privacy have been told that police officers would not have access to personal contacts, photographs or conversations. Hmmm?

Please Weigh In on This Subject

If you think it is a good idea, please be the first to comment on it below. If you think it is too intrusive we want to hear from you as well. Whatever your opinion is – your voice matters. So let’s get the conversation going.
