Two Fortuna Residents Sustain Major Injuries in Head-On Crash
On Monday, March 1, 2021, two Fortuna residents suffered major trauma as the result of an area auto accident. According to Humboldt California Highway Patrol (CHP), the crash occurred on a local highway in the morning, and two vehicles were involved. Updates on the driver’s conditions have not been reported, and the collision is under investigation at this time.
Crash Information
According to police, the crash happened at around 7:10 a.m. on Highway 101 to the north of Salmon Creek in the area of Myer’s Flat. Reports indicate that a 34-year-old man was driving his 2002 GMC Yukon southbound on 101 while a 21-year-old woman was driving north in a 2016 Hyundai Elantra.
As the vehicles approached each other, the Hyundai driver apparently lost control of her vehicle for reasons that remain unknown. The Hyundai veered left and entered the southbound side of the highway, driving directly into the path of the GMC. The two vehicles crashed into each other head-on, causing extensive damage to both.
Response
Police were notified regarding the crash via phone and immediately dispatched a response team to the area. At the site, responders discovered that one of the drivers was trapped inside their wrecked vehicle and conducted an emergency extrication using heavy machinery. Both drivers were determined to have sustained major injuries and were rushed by ground ambulance to the St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka for emergency medical treatments.
Investigation
As officers keep looking into this crash, reports have indicated that investigators do not suspect driver intoxication to have played a role in causing the collision. Frequently, accidents such as this one are complicated events and are caused by a mix of contributing factors. Furthermore, a number of common crash factors aren’t the fault of either driver, but happen because of the negligence of a third party like an auto product manufacturer or government responsible for maintaining a roadway.
Head-On Accidents
Head-on accidents transfer the full momentum of both vehicles into the crash, meaning that they involve a lot more force than other types of accidents and are especially likely to cause severe injuries. Common types of injuries that result from head-on accidents include:
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Fractured limbs
- Chest trauma
- Spinal cord injuries
- Lacerations
- Internal injuries
All of these can be very serious and may require extensive treatment in order for crash survivors to regain their health. In some cases, survivors may suffer health issues that affect them for the rest of their lives.
