One Person Dies in Fortuna Auto Accident

On Saturday, January 30, 2021, one person passed away after suffering injuries in a Fortuna auto accident. The collision happened in the very early morning and it involved two different passenger vehicles. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office states that they are withholding the decedent’s identity until their family has been notified regarding the tragic crash. One additional person reportedly suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash. Additionally, one driver involved in this accident has been placed under arrest on charges of driving under the influence.

Crash Information

The collision happened at around 1:13 a.m. on Fernbridge Drive to the north of Finch Creek Road on the northwestern side of the city. Preliminary investigations conducted by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) found that a 25-year-old woman from Phillipsville was driving north on Fernbridge in a 2006 Honda Civic and had just passed Finch Creek while a 1988 Ford Mustang was driving south approaching the Honda’s location.

At this time, one of the vehicles drifted over the median and entered oncoming traffic. The Ford and Honda subsequently crashed head-on into each other, causing extreme damages to both.

Response

CHP dispatch rushed a response team to the area directly after receiving notification of the collision. At the scene, medical officials found that the Ford driver had suffered a critical injury. Sadly, the individual lost their life at the scene. The Honda driver was found with major trauma and was transported by ambulance to the St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. No other people were reported to have been in either vehicle at the time of the collision.

Investigation

Before being released into hospital care, the Honda driver was arrested and charged with misdemeanor driving under the influence. At this time, Humboldt area CHP is conducting a full accident investigation and have not stated any other suspected crash factors.

Police have asked for anyone crash witnesses or people with information that could help investigators better understand this crash call CHP and report what they know. Those looking to provide investigators with information should call (707) 822-5981 or email police at [email protected].
