Vacaville DUI Fatality Update
I’m Ed Smith, a Vacaville wrongful death lawyer. Recently, we reported on a DUI collision that took the life of a local woman. More information regarding the circumstances of the collision and the intoxicated driver has been reported by authorities. A summary of the collision, as well as the additional info, can be read here.
Accident Re-cap
The accident happened on Monday, July 31, 2017, at about 6 p.m. when a 48-year-old Vacaville woman had been driving through the intersection of Marshall and Nut Tree roads. Previously, the details of the collision were unreported except for the fact that the woman’s Honda Sedan collided with the GMC SUV of a 65-year-old motorist who officers suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol.
Additional Info
Over the past couple of days, the Vacaville Police Department (VPD) has released the identity of the killed woman as well as further explanation of the collision. The woman was identified as Cynthia Clay, a longtime Vacaville resident.
The accident was reported to have been caused by the SUV, which illegally entered the intersection and T-boned Clay’s Honda while traveling at about 40 miles per hour. The SUV reportedly collided with the driver’s side door of the Honda. VPD indicated that Clay was pinned inside the driver’s seat of the wreckage of her vehicle and that firefighters from the Vacaville Fire Department (VFD) had to extricate her from the vehicle.
Cynthia Clay was transported to a nearby hospital but lost her life not long after arriving. The driver of the SUV was arrested for DUI at the scene of the accident, but was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a condition that authorities say was not related to the crash. Upon leaving the hospital the man was booked into the Solano County Jail on Tuesday night.
Prior DUI
It has been reported that the driver of the SUV was previously arrested for driving while intoxicated. Vacaville police officers reportedly arrested the man four years ago on January 3, 2013. Records indicated that, at the time of arrest, the man had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent, which is almost triple the legal limit.
The man reportedly agreed to take a plea offer from prosecutors and pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge. The driver apparently paid over $1,700 in fines and also attended over 30 hours of counseling and safety classes in order to ensure that he would not drive drunk again.
Driving Drunk
Those who drive while drunk or otherwise intoxicated put themselves and others in serious danger. In fact, DUI drivers are involved in almost one-third of all car accident fatalities across the United States. If you plan on drinking, always have a safe way to return home.
