Volkswagen Touareg Fuel Filter Flange Recall

I’m Ed Smith, a Fresno car accident lawyer. A recent recall by the Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) has affected many of their older model mid-size SUV vehicles. The recall was established due to a fire hazard from an alleged defective fuel filter flange. If the issue is not resolved promptly, it can increase the risk of a fire to vehicle occupants.

Recall Details

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 73,941 vehicles equipped with a fuel filter flange that may crack and allow fuel to leak. If a fuel leak is in the proximity of an ignition source, this may increase the risk of a fire.

Which Vehicles?

The following vehicles are listed in the recall:

  • 2004 to 2007: Touareg vehicles

Recall Remedy

Owners will be notified by Volkswagen if their vehicle is included in the fuel filter flange recall. Owners may have their vehicle serviced at their nearest dealer to inspect the flange for cracks. If cracks are detected, the flange will be replaced. If no cracks are located, technicians will install a protective film onto the filter flange. Any repairs will be performed at no charge to vehicle owners. Owners will be notified of the recall by November 19, 2017. Remedy parts are not currently available, however, Volkswagen will send a second notice when parts are available for recall service. Owners may contact the Volkswagen customer service line at (800) 893-5298 for more information.

Accidents Involving Recalled Vehicles

An auto manufacturer is obligated to design and manufacture vehicles that are safe and do not pose any potential risk of harm to the public. If a safety flaw is discovered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the automaker, vehicle owners must be notified and be provided with a remedy as soon as possible. Usually, manufacturers address and offer a resolution to a vehicle defect to avoid civil penalties with the NHTSA. However, not all manufacturers work this way. If a manufacturer has received complaints regarding a specific component of the vehicle and fails to remedy the defect, they may be held liable for the failure of exercising ordinary care. If a party has suffered injuries from a car accident involving a defective vehicle or defective vehicle part, they may be compensated for their losses. A claim against an auto manufacturer can be difficult to undergo. It is best to contact an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer to protect your rights in a car accident involving a recalled vehicle.
