Young Girl Seriously Injured During Alleged DUI Crash in McKinleyville
On Sunday, November 15, 2020, a car crash in McKinleyville left an 8-year-old girl with major injuries. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash happened in the evening and involved multiple vehicles. As of the latest reports, the young girl was in hospital custody in serious condition. Additionally, one individual has been placed under arrest on DUI charges related to this collision.
Crash Details
CHP reported that the collision happened at around 6:45 on Sutter Road near the intersection of Weirup Lane in the southern part of McKinleyville. A 29-year-old Santa Barbara man was driving westbound on Sutter in a 2000 Nissan Frontier when, suddenly, his vehicle veered to the left and entered oncoming traffic lanes. As a result, the Nissan crashed head-on into an eastbound 2007 Jeep Wrangler. Both vehicles were damaged extensively during the crash.
Response to Crash in McKinleyville
Responders were immediately called into the crash scene. When they arrived, officers found that the driver of the Nissan and the young girl, who had been a passenger in the Jeep, were both injured. Responders initially believed that the 8-year-old had suffered minor injuries and had her transported to a local hospital for treatment and screening.
At the hospital, medical officials discovered that the girl had sustained a “serious internal injury” and called for a helicopter ambulance. The girl was taken to the UCSF Oakland Children’s hospital, where doctors continue to provide her with treatment.
The Nissan driver was taken to the Mad River Community Hospital for treatment. After being released from the hospital, the individual was booked into the Humboldt County jail on a felony charge of DUI resulting in major trauma. The Jeep driver was uninjured.
Fundraiser
A friend of the young girl has started an online fundraiser in order to benefit her family. Proceeds from the fundraiser will help the family offset medical expenses as well as pay for housing and food while they are staying in Oakland.
