The old adage says “time flies when you’re having fun,” but time also flies while you’re not paying attention to it! Be sure to make the rest of the year special. Come out and make new memories, rekindle old friendships, and live in the moment by finding an event to attend that suits your interests. Time is precious, spend yours wisely!

Shotokan Karate

Date: Sunday, May 20, 2018

Time: 3:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.

Location: 80 Power Avenue, Pittsburg, CA 94565

Admission: $80

Shotokan is the most widely practiced form of karate, and it was developed through combining multiple martial arts disciplines. Children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old are encouraged to attend these basic training sessions, which will vary depending on experience level. Beginners will meet from 3:15 – 4:00 p.m., white belts will practice from 4:00 – 4:45 p.m., an orange/yellow belt combo class will be held from 4:45 – 5:30 p.m, and lastly there will be an intermediate level class from 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Held at the community room of the Pittsburg Library, students will be taught about the values of self-control, focus, discipline, loyalty, and respect!

Vicarious Trauma Workshop

Date: Monday, May 21, 2018

Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Location: 51 Marina Boulevard, Pittsburg, CA 94565

Admission: Free

This informative workshop will spend two hours educating participants about the psychological effects that trauma can have on caregivers and providers. The different levels of trauma will be identified: primary trauma, secondary trauma, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Additionally, a theoretical model of self-care will be discussed for its relevance to countering the effects of trauma. Finally, the benefits of action plans will be explored, and attendees will be encouraged to find one change they can make towards better self-care.

Boater’s Breakfast

Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2018

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Location: 51 Marina Blvd. Suite E, Pittsburg, CA 94565

Admission: Free

This event will be held at the Harbor Master’s Office in Lowy Basin and will include complimentary doughnuts and coffee. Attendees will be hanging out just a few yards from the open waters where the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers intersect. Wake up early, grab a quick bite and meet the friendly Marina staff members and fellow boaters.

Chester Santos is an established motivational speaker and memory expert. As a former winner of the USA memory championship, he travels and speaks to audiences all around the world. Santos strives to teach people about the skilled art of memory and the tactics that can be used to strengthen your mental capacity. This free event will be one to remember!
