Red Bluff Collision Leaves Two People Seriously Injured
On Thursday, December 31, 2020, two people from Red Bluff suffered major injuries as the result of a collision that took place on a rural highway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the accident, stating that it happened in the afternoon and involved multiple vehicles. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Crash Details
The accident occurred at around 2:31 p.m. on State Route 36E, close to the Paynes Creek intersection. CHP reports that the 19-year-old was driving a 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound while the 29-year-old was driving a distance behind in a 2019 Mitsubishi Outland. Preliminary investigations suggested that the Mitsubishi entered the eastbound lane in order to pass the Santa Fe.
As the Mitsubishi was passing, the driver of the Hyundai apparently lost control of his vehicle for unknown reasons. The Hyundai veered into eastbound lanes, entering the path of the Mitsubishi. The Mitsubishi driver reportedly swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision, but was unable to and crashed into the Santa Fe.
The force of the collision sent the Hyundai off-road, where it eventually crashed into a boulder while the Mitsubishi overturned multiple times, finally coming to a complete stop on its roof.
Response
CHP responders were rushed to the site after dispatchers were alerted to the incident. Upon arrival, officials discovered that the driver of the Mitsubishi had been seriously injured, suffering a laceration to his head. Additionally, his front-seat passenger was also determined to have sustained major trauma. Both parties were driven to the Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment. A third, 5-year-old passenger of the Mitsubishi was also taken to the hospital as a precaution but did not reportedly suffer injuries.
Investigation
As CHP continues their accident investigation, no likely causes have been reported. Often, collisions like this one occur because of multiple factors that can include non-driver causes such as defective car parts or hazardous roads.
