Vehicle Fatally Strikes Pedestrian Near Oroville
On Thursday, November 7, 2019, an auto accident involving a pedestrian near Oroville caused fatal injuries. The crash happened in the early morning on a local highway and involved a single vehicle in addition to the pedestrian. The decedent was identified as a middle-aged man, but authorities say that he was not carrying identification at the time of the crash. Additionally, the woman driving the involved vehicle suffered minor injuries during the collision. The accident is under investigation by officers of California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Crash Details
According to information from CHP, the accident happened just prior to 4:00 a.m. on Highway 70 to the north of Palermo Road. Police stated that an Oroville woman had been driving a red sedan southbound on 70 when her vehicle struck a man who had been crossing the road on foot. Photos taken at the crash site indicate that the vehicle was damaged during the incident.
The driver pulled over and contacted police who dispatched emergency responders to the scene immediately. Upon arrival, medical personnel discovered that the pedestrian was critically injured. Tragically, the injured man lost his life before he could be transported to a hospital.
Investigation
As police investigate this accident, no suspected collision factors have been mentioned in reports. When an involved party loses their life during a crash, it makes investigation difficult for authorities because they are unable to hear the decedent’s version of events. For this reason, it’s common for key factors in wrongful death cases to go overlooked during official investigations. This is why it’s important to contact an attorney who knows how to conduct a private accident investigation with the rights of decedents and their families in mind. Your lawyer will be able to determine whether or not negligence may have been involved in the crash.
Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrian accidents are particularly dangerous because pedestrians do not have the same protection that vehicles offer drivers and passengers. Even in low-speed collisions, pedestrians are likely to suffer serious injuries. Because pedestrians are so vulnerable, drivers need to take extra caution in areas where people may be walking on or near roadways.
According to government accident data, there were 634 traumatic pedestrian accidents in Butte County over the last ten years of available data (2008-2018). These accidents had a fatality rate of over ten percent, more than five times the rate for accidents involving only vehicles.
Calling an Attorney
After a fatal crash, potentially liable parties are usually quick to begin preparing a legal defense. This can make it difficult for families to recover the payments that they need to afford medical expenses and funeral costs as well as make up for any loss of income they’ve suffered. For this reason, it’s vital to reach out to a wrongful death lawyer as soon as you can following a crash.
