Driving Statistics in California Cities
A recently conducted study provides us with statistics based on the most dangerous and safest cities for drivers in California. The cities that were chosen for this study all had populations of over 100,000. The study found that densely populated cities were the most dangerous on average.
Study Methodology
The data of this study was analyzed by two dimensions, contributory and collision factors. Researchers identified the primary collision factors based on these two dimensions that increased the risk of road safety for motorists in California.
The following factors were found and accounted for in this study:
- Alcohol-Related Crash Rate
- Average Annual Rainfall
- Collision Rate
- Daily Vehicle Miles Traveled (DVMT)
- Fatality Rate
- Hit-and-Run Rate
- Infrastructure Share: Traffic Control Devices and Percentage of Total Accidents Attributed to Unusual Road Conditions
- Injury Rate
- Percentage of Young Drivers (15 to 29 years) vs Total Population
- Population Density
- Speed-Related Crash Rate
Study Results
The study accounted for 123,512 motor vehicle collisions, 749 fatalities, and 92,977 injuries in total. These results were found from published accident data on the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) website. The results from this study indicated that Southern California is home to 13 out of the 20 safest cities and 14 out of the 20 most dangerous cities in the state. The results also found that Northern California drivers were more susceptible to the risk of bodily injuries due to its slightly higher overall injury rate and crash rate.
